RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Manufacturers are increasingly branding personal care products (PCPs) specifically for men. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to characterize ingredients and claims of facial moisturizers marketed to men. METHODS: Men's facial moisturizers from 7 different online retailers were identified in June-September 2018. Ingredients were grouped and identified per the Ingredient Database of the Personal Care Products Council. Potential allergens were identified using the 2017 American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) Core Allergen Series and 2017-2018 North American Contact Dermatitis Group Screening Series. RESULTS: Sixty-five men's facial moisturizers were identified with a total of 1930 ingredients. On average, there were 12 ACDS Core and 9 North American Contact Dermatitis Group Screening allergens per product. A total of 70.8% of products contained between 6 and 15 ACDS Core allergens. The most notable allergens were fragrances (present in 98.5% of products), propylene glycol/derivatives (32.3%), parabens (29.2%), and alkyl glucosides (26.2%). Interestingly, less than 10% of products contained the most common allergenic preservatives in PCPs: formaldehyde releasers and methylisothiazolinone. CONCLUSIONS: Men's facial moisturizers commonly contain fragrances, emulsifiers, and glucosides but relatively few allergenic preservatives. This may reflect changes in modern PCP preservation. These findings are important for modern dermatologists to be aware, especially in a new era of male skincare.

RESUMEN

Parabens are preservatives widely used in consumer products including cosmetics and food. Whether low-dose paraben exposure may cause adverse health effects has been discussed controversially in recent years. Here we investigate the effect of prenatal paraben exposure on childhood overweight by combining epidemiological data from a mother-child cohort with experimental approaches. Mothers reporting the use of paraben-containing cosmetic products have elevated urinary paraben concentrations. For butyl paraben (BuP) a positive association is observed to overweight within the first eight years of life with a stronger trend in girls. Consistently, maternal BuP exposure of mice induces a higher food intake and weight gain in female offspring. The effect is accompanied by an epigenetic modification in the neuronal Pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) enhancer 1 leading to a reduced hypothalamic POMC expression. Here we report that maternal paraben exposure may contribute to childhood overweight development by altered POMC-mediated neuronal appetite regulation.

RESUMEN

A method was developed for the simultaneous determination of benzoic acid and its esters, parabens, phenoxyisopropanol, chlorphenesin, dehydroacetic acid, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol, methylchloroisothiazolone, methylisothiazolone and other preservatives in cosmetics by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The samples were extracted ultrasonically with a 0.1 mg/mL L(+)-ascorbic acid menthol solution after being spiked with a mixture solution of 2-octanol, phenol and heptachlor as internal standards and anhydrous sodium sulfate as a dehydrating reagent. Finally, the extract was centrifuged, filtered, and then analyzed by GC-MS/MS. The analytes were separated using an HP-5MS capillary column (30 m×0.25 mm×0.25 µm) with a temperature-programming program. The inlet, transfer line and ion source temperatures were set to 260, 250 and 230℃, respectively. Helium (99.999%) was used as the carrier gas at a flow rate of 1 mL/min. The final extract (1 µL) was injected in split mode (10:1). Analysis was performed in the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Three types of cosmetics, as well as water, milk and cream as samples were selected to verify the accuracy of the method at four levels. The average spiked recoveries ranged from 82.3% to 119.4% with relative standard deviations (n=6) of less than 14.3%. The limits of detection were lower than 0.99 µg/kg for all the preservatives. The method is sensitive, and reliable for the simultaneous determination of the 25 preservatives in cosmetics. Nonetheless, complementary methods need to be developed for the determination of some other preservatives that cannot be detected by GC-MS/MS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The economic burden of cosmetics, such as moisturizers, has been increasing. Despite the high price of some market moisturizers, there have been no studies evaluating the allergenicity of these products. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential allergens within moisturizers based on economic value, by analyzing the substances found in moisturizers available online at the largest drugstore chain-CVS Health (CVS Health, Woonsocket, RI). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, ingredients found in 50 expensive and 50 inexpensive moisturizers were matched with sensitizers within the Core Allergen Series published by the American Contact Dermatitis Society and the North American Contact Dermatitis Group. Student t test was used to compare the mean number of allergens present in each group. A χ test or Fisher exact test, where necessary, was used to compare the rates of specific allergen groups between the expensive and inexpensive products. RESULTS: Twenty-six allergenic substances were present overall in the 100 total products surveyed. The expensive moisturizers averaged significantly more allergens per product (8.28 vs 5.60, P = 0.003) than the inexpensive products. CONCLUSIONS: The sensitizing potential of expensive moisturizers may be higher than that of inexpensive moisturizers. Physicians may counsel cosmetic-induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) patients that monetary value is not a suitable proxy for evaluating the risk of ACD.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Preservatives are added to cosmetic, household cleaning, and other industrial products to prevent the growth of microorganisms. Unfortunately, exposure to these substances can cause sensitization. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January and June 2015, we analyzed the ingredients of 2300 products commercially available in Spain to identify the frequency of a wide variety of preservatives in different product categories. We analyzed 1093 skin care and cosmetic products sold exclusively in pharmacies (dermocosmetics), 458 household cleaning and personal hygiene and cosmetic products sold in supermarkets, 636 topical medications, and 113 cosmetic products sold in a herbal shop. RESULTS: Phenoxyethanol, citric acid, sodium benzoate, and potassium sorbate were very common in all the cosmetic product categories. Parabens were present in 16.1% of dermocosmetic products, 14.45% of cosmetic products available in supermarkets, 0.88% of cosmetic products available in the herbal shop, 5.18% of topical medications, and in none of the cleaning products. Isothiazolinones were identified in 2.56% of dermocosmetic products, 18% of cosmetic products in supermarkets, 7.9% of cosmetic products in the herbal shop, 63.63% of household cleaners, and in none of the topical medications. Formaldehyde releasers were detected in 5.76% of dermocosmetic products, 6.42% of cosmetic products sold in supermarkets, 7.96% of cosmetic products sold in the herbal shop, 3.93% of topical medications, and 16.74% of household cleaners. CONCLUSIONS: Evaluation of the presence of preservatives in everyday products allows us to indirectly estimate exposure levels to each one. Measures restricting the use of the most problematic preservatives need to be strengthened.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis commonly occurs on the face. Facial cleansing wipes may be an underrecognized source of allergens. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of potentially allergenic ingredients in facial wet wipes. METHODS: Ingredient lists from name brand and generic facial wipes from 4 large retailers were analyzed. RESULTS: In the 178 facial wipes examined, a total of 485 ingredients were identified (average, 16.7 ingredients per wipe). Excluding botanicals, the top 15 potentially allergenic ingredients were glycerin (64.0%), fragrance (63.5%), phenoxyethanol (53.9%), citric acid (51.1%), disodium EDTA (44.4%), sorbic acid derivatives (39.3%), tocopherol derivatives (38.8%), polyethylene glycol derivatives (32.6%), glyceryl stearate (31.5%), sodium citrate (29.8%), glucosides (27.5%), cetearyl alcohol (25.8%), propylene glycol (25.3%), sodium benzoate (24.2%), and ceteareth-20 (23.6%)/parabens (23.6%). Of note, methylisothiazolinone (2.2%) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (1.1%) were uncommon. The top potential allergens of botanical origin included Aloe barbadensis (41.0%), chamomile extracts (27.0%), tea extracts (21.3%), Cucumis sativus (20.2%), and Hamamelis virginiana (10.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Many potential allergens are present in facial wet wipes, including fragrances, preservatives, botanicals, glucosides, and propylene glycol.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Thinned fruits are agricultural by-products that contain large quantities of interesting compounds due to their early maturity stage. In this work, the phenolic profile and the antioxidant activity of six thinned stone fruits (apricot, cherry, flat peach, peach, plum and nectarine) have been investigated, focussing on proanthocyanidins. RESULTS: Thinned nectarine had the highest content of total phenols [67.43 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) g-1 dry weight (DW)] and total flavonoids (56.97 mg CE g-1 DW) as well as the highest antioxidant activity measured by DPPH scavenging (133.30 mg [Trolox equivalents (TE) g-1 DW] and FRAP assay (30.42 mg TE g-1 DW). Proanthocyanidins were very abundant in these by-products, and the main phenolic group quantified in cherry (10.54 mg g-1 DW), flat peach (33.47 mg g-1 DW) and nectarine (59.89 mg g-1 DW), while hydroxycinnamic acids predominate in apricot, peach and plum (6.67, 22.04 and 23.75 mg g-1 DW, respectively). The low, mean degree of polymerisation of proanthocyanidins suggests that their bioavailability could be very high. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that thinned stone fruit extracts might be used as antioxidants in foods or as a source of compounds with health-related benefits that can be used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

Sulfur fumigation (SF) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a highly efficient and important traditional preservation method in China. This method has generated a great deal of concern and has been disputed in the last few years because of its uncertain safety. SF can alter the quality of TCMs by damaging the bioactive compounds, changing chemical profiles, and generating detrimental exogenous materials. However, SF is still widely used in the herbal medicinal industry because of its various benefits, such as its pesticidal and anti-bacterial effects, easy operation, and low-cost. This review contains the current situation, chemical mechanism and reactions during SF, the pharmacological and pharmacokinetic research, and the influence of quality caused by SF. In addition, a quantification-operation sulfur fumigation device (QOSFD), which can maintain the quality of TCMs by controlling the SF processing parameters, has been designed and introduced. The key technologies of this device involve controlling the O(2) content and the temperature of SO(2) as well as the quantification of sulfur in SF. This device can reduce the possibility of reaction between bioactive compounds and sulfur/sulfurous acid, as well as control the limitation of SO(2) residues. The QOSFD is regarded as a promising preservation technique in the field of TCM, medicinal materials, agriculture, and fruit industry.
